Tiago’s BBQ 23rd July

Saturday 23rd July was the night of the long awaited Summer BBQ to be cooked by talented chef Tiago. People assembled about 7.00pm  and some went and sat up in the garden with a beer while others chose to find a table in the community room. Maybe they had some inside information – we’ll never know.

Tiago and Guen were all prepared athe the cooking site round the back of the club as you can see from this picture.

Those who had chosen the garden were just getting comfortable when the first drops of water were detected. Up to this point it had been an idyllic sunny summer day BUT creeping up on us all, from the south, came this BBQ.

Yes! you guessed it –  a Big Black Qloud. Here it is leering down on our event.

Blackcloud.jpgThe hardy souls up the garden sat it out. It never really rained properly, just teased and tantalised us with enough big drops to make it look threatening but then it just drifted  away up north having had a laugh.

Tiago’s meal was great. There was a delicious burger, hand made to Tiago’s own recipe and a lovely big plump and juicy sausage. On the side was corn on the cob, lettuce and slaw with a baked potato and loads of butter. That was followed by Chocolate Brownie with Chocolate Sauce and Ice Cream. The weather couldn’t spoil that lot.

Finally everyone gave in and retired to the comfort indoors.

It was a pity that more people didn’t come for the BBQ. We had catered for between 20 and 30 servings but in the end only about 15 came. That was despite the assurances of all those on Friday night who said they were going to come. Maybe we have some lessons to learn from that.

Dominoes Tournament 9th July

Following the success of the darts evening Gavin, the steward, had another experiment to get more folk into the club. The darts and dommies season is all through the winter period. But it has untapped potential for the summertime too, as Gavin proved. The proposed tournament was an elimination from a basis of sixteen players to find the eventual winner and offered a first prize of £40 and second prize 0f £15 to tempt the out of season player. The game was “Fives & threes”. Entry ticket was £5 which included a serving of sausage and chips. Who could ask for more?

The evening attracted about 15 players of a wide range of abilities. Here is a picture of the first round with everyone busily concentrating on their dots.

Dommies is not a quick game – it needs lots of thought and head scratching to ensure the best progress up the pegboard – so the evening progressed steadily and the bar staff were under only gentle pressure. That is, until a crowd of members of a touring cycle club invaded the bar for their annual visit. Then they needed reinforcements from the floor which slowed the tournament down a bit. All in a day’s work as they say.

By about 9.15pm a number of players had been eliminated and the action was getting serious for those that remained. That was just the time to serve the sausage and chips for some light relief and also for the charming young ladies to go round with the raffle tickets. A nice array of prizes had been assembled.

In the end the second prize was won by Rob.

And the first prize was taken by Andrew. Here he is captured in his moment of glory as he is presented with his prize and congratulated by amiring fans.

The evening was a lot of fun and ended quite late but was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thanks to all who took part and to those who helped and especially to Gavin for his bright idea.

Secret Garden

Behind the Community Centre building is a lovely Community Garden.  A great place to enjoy a beer and sit and keep your eye on the kids, there’s plenty of space for them to run around. Or you can relax in comfort and enjoy a BBQ on a Summer’s evening.

Here it is pictured a few weeks ago after a long and dismal winter with the shrubs around the border looking as though they need some attention and the furniture in need of some tender loving care. Well, we had some action.

Yesterday (3rd July 2016)  a work party of volunteers gave time to attend to the luxuriously growing plants and shrubs. We might have had more volunteers but Edward’s very popular Farm  Walk and Guided Nature Tour was scheduled for the same time slot.

A good deal of cutting back and weeding was required. The team met up at 10.00am and set about their task with enthusiasm, vigour and good equipment. Team leader as Chairman of the Management committee was Neil. Representatives of that committee and the  Social Club committee were present. Here they all are enjoying an elevenses coffee kindly provided by the Steward, Gavin.

Here’s Geoff wielding his trusty trimmer to good effect just outside the back door. It is just amazing how quickly the stuff grows and gets out of hand.

Here, Neil and Andrew  are tackling some serious jungle at the back of the garden. This let some daylight in after it was chopped back.

Justine exercises her special skills sorting out the unruly shrubs. As you can easily see from this picture, the next working party will be devoting some attention to the garden furniture.

Dawn gets down to clearing little weeds in the shrubs outside the back door.

All in all, a couple of hours well spent in a good cause  and our heartfelt thanks go out to our industrious friends for making the Beer Garden look so attractive especially with the Summer ahead of us and the prospect of some time to be spent enjoying a beer, good company and the fruits of this worthwhile exercise.

We will be looking for volunteers to work on the furniture. Contact Neilo if you would like to help.

Darts Competition 4th June

Saturday 4th June was the Darts Competition organised by the new steward Gavin Austin. His original plan was to attract 32 players from the local darts leagues, the keen ones who were missing their darts matches and couldn’t wait until the Autumn and the start of the next season. The competition would produce one final winner for a first prize of £70. The entry fee was £5. A superb buffet supper designed to help keep up the strength of the players was provided by Debbie, Gavin’s partner.

On the night, the event managed to attract 15 competitors which was less than hoped for but the evening went with a swing. There was plenty of competiive spirit and plenty of good laughs too. The final winner was Adrian (Ady) Siddle who was more than pleased to win against some serious opposition and the smile on his face proved the prize had gone to a good home.

At the end of the evening the players congratulated Gavin for a very enjoyable event and there were demands that he run more like that in the future which was very encouraging.

Gavin has in mind a similar tourney for the dominoes players but that is still in the planning stage. Keep your eyes on this blog for news of upcoming events.
